A Roblox username change starts in your account settings. Before paying for one, check whether you actually want a new @username or just a different name above your avatar. Those are separate fields, and changing the wrong one is an avoidable expense.

Quick answerOpen Roblox Settings, choose Account Info, and select the pencil beside your username. Enter the new username and your current password on Roblox, review the Robux charge, then confirm. A display name change uses a different pencil and is free. Neither changes your numeric user ID.

Which Roblox name are you changing?

Your @username identifies your account in searches and sign-in. Your display name is the more prominent name people may see while playing. Someone remembering only the large name on a profile can easily confuse the two.

For example, imagine a profile showing Nova above @NovaBuilds. The owner wants friends to see Starling in an experience. A display name edit may solve that problem without replacing @NovaBuilds. If the owner wants a different @handle for people to search, they need the username setting.

Roblox allows shared display names and currently limits display name edits to once every seven days. Its display name guide also notes that some accounts label this field simply Name. Read the field label before editing it.

The username, display name and user ID guide explains how all three fit together. Keeping them separate is especially useful when someone changes their appearance and you need to confirm you are still looking at the same account.

How to change your Roblox username

  1. Sign in through the Roblox website or official app. Check that you are using the account you intend to rename.
  2. Open Settings. On desktop, use the gear menu; in the mobile app, open More and then Settings.
  3. Select Account Info and the pencil beside the username.
  4. Type your proposed username. Review any availability or validation message before continuing.
  5. Enter your current password within Roblox's own settings, inspect the charge on the confirmation screen, and choose Buy when ready.

This follows Roblox's official username change instructions. Afterward, check the @username on your profile and update any places where you share it. You do not need a Chrome extension to perform the change.

If several accounts use the same device, checking the profile first matters more than doing the steps quickly. A successful rename on the wrong account still leaves you with the original problem. Keep the confirmation screen open long enough to inspect the spelling, including repeated letters and easily confused characters.

How much does a Roblox username change cost?

It costs Robux. The current Roblox help page does not specify a fixed amount, so use the charge shown in your own settings as the deciding figure. Tutorials quoting an older price are not a substitute for the confirmation you are about to approve.

Check the amount against your balance before buying more Robux. If your aim is only a new visible name, return to the display name option first. That decision is easier to make before a payment than afterward.

Be wary of pages offering to perform a free username change if you paste account data into a form. A public tracking tool has no role in authorizing an account rename. RoTrail observes supported public changes; it cannot change your username or waive Roblox's charge.

What happens to the account and the old name?

The account keeps its original creation date, and previous usernames remain discoverable through Roblox's supported history and search features. Returning to an earlier username is another paid change. Roblox also says you cannot swap usernames between accounts. These rules are set out in the username help page.

A rename is therefore a poor way to try to erase your old identity. If an old name exposes personal information, contact Roblox Support about the specific privacy concern. Do not assume buying a new name removes the earlier one from records.

For links you want to keep using, save the numeric profile URL. Roblox's identity documentation tells developers to identify users by their user ID because names can change. In practical terms, a bookmark to the right account is more durable than a note containing only its old @handle.

If you manage a group or publish a contact page, update the visible name there as well. People may think an old handle belongs to an inactive account even when the profile behind it is unchanged. A short announcement to your existing community can prevent mistaken identity without exposing any account settings.

If the username change does not work

Read the exact error before changing anything else. An unavailable name, a rejected name, a password problem and insufficient Robux are different issues. Repeating the purchase flow does not resolve a name that fails validation.

For a name that appears free, avoid treating an unsuccessful People search as proof that Roblox will let you claim it. The settings form is the relevant availability check. Try a different spelling you would be comfortable keeping, rather than adding random characters under pressure.

If your screen now shows an unfamiliar name and you did not request the edit, stop treating this as a naming problem. Verify the account and use the account security warning signs guide to review sessions and other changes. A name edit alone does not identify who made it.

If you are searching for someone else after their rename, start with checking Roblox username history. Historical lookup and changing your own account are separate tasks.

How to track future username changes

A Roblox profile tracker can keep a selected account on a watchlist by user ID and compare its name on later successful checks. That is useful when you follow a creator or moderate a community and want to notice a future rename.

It is not a way to reconstruct a complete timeline from before monitoring began. If a name changed between two checks, the alert establishes an observation interval. It does not establish the exact edit time. Our profile tracking setup guide covers the baseline and alert workflow; the username change date guide covers the timestamp limitation.

Questions about username changes

Can I change a Roblox username for free?

The normal username change flow requires Robux. A free display name change is a separate feature. Neither RoTrail nor another public profile tool can turn one into the other.

Will changing my username stop a tracker following the account?

A tracker anchored to the numeric user ID can still recognize it. Whether a particular tool has a usable record depends on its coverage, successful checks and retention.

Do I need to make a new account?

No. Use the settings on the existing account if your goal is to rename it. Creating another account creates a different identity and is unnecessary for this task.

Can I tell when another player changed their name?

An old-name record and an exact edit date are different information. A dated observation can help narrow the interval, but it should not be presented as a precise change timestamp.
