If your Roblox display name will not change, first check whether you changed it within the last seven days. Then confirm you are editing the display-name field on the correct account and read the exact error before retrying. A refused edit, a broken Save button and an old name still visible after saving need different checks.
Roblox's display-name help page says this edit is free, limited to once every seven days and subject to its content rules. Some accounts show the field as Name. It is separate from changing a username.
Start with the field and the account
Open account Settings, choose Account Info, and select the display-name edit control. Enter the name, choose Save, then refresh to check the result. That is the route Roblox documents for this setting.
If you expected the account's @username to change, you chose a different setting. A display-name edit does not rename that field. Use the username versus display-name guide to identify what you are seeing before trying again. The username change instructions cover the separate paid action.
On a shared phone or computer, inspect the signed-in @username before diagnosing an old name. You might have saved an edit on one account and reopened a second account's profile. Bookmarking the correct profile makes that check less ambiguous.
Match the next step to what happened
| What you see | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| A message about a recent display-name change | Review when your last successful edit happened and wait for Roblox to permit another. |
| The proposed name is rejected | Read the rejection, review the name against Roblox's rules and choose an acceptable alternative. |
| The edit control or Save button does nothing | Check whether the page itself is malfunctioning. |
| Account Info shows the new value but another screen shows the old one | Record both screens; distinguish a saved edit from a display that has not caught up. |
| The value changes back later | Check the correct account and any Roblox notice before assuming a loading problem. |
The table is a troubleshooting sequence, not a diagnosis based only on the phrase "won't change." Keep the wording of the actual message in your notes. "It said something about seven days" loses the detail that distinguishes a rule from an unexpected error.
If Roblox says you changed it too recently
Use your own record of the last successful change if you have one. A note or dated screenshot is better than guessing from the day you first thought about the new name. If you do not know when you last changed it, say that plainly when asking support for help.
Do not assume that reaching a particular weekday proves the restriction has ended. The help page states the seven-day rule but does not document a universal midnight reset time or an account-specific countdown lookup for this guide to recommend. Follow the result Roblox gives your account.
For example, a player remembers choosing a name "last Friday" but has no saved time. That memory alone cannot establish precisely when another edit should become available. If the restriction remains after they believe the wait is over, the useful report is the attempted time, last known successful change and exact current message.
A tracker observation does not settle that timing question. Our display-name history guide explains why a saved observation shows when a name was seen, rather than necessarily when the account owner edited it. Do not use an observation timestamp as a promised unlock time.
If Roblox rejects the proposed name
Roblox filters display names and says a name that breaks its rules may be reset to the username. Review the proposed wording rather than repeatedly submitting it unchanged. The official page also notes that Japanese-character support is a beta feature unavailable to some users, so do not assume a name accepted on another account will work on yours.
Use the validation shown in the editor. This guide does not provide a homemade list of banned words or a supposed filter bypass. A rejection does not prove another player reserved the name: Roblox allows shared display names.
If an ordinary proposed name receives an unexplained error, save the exact message privately. Distinguish "this proposed name was rejected" from "every permitted edit fails"; testing a different acceptable proposal, when Roblox allows it, can help establish which problem you have.
If Save does nothing or the old name remains
Refresh once and return to Account Info. Write down which value appears there. If the new value is present, compare it with the precise place that still shows the old one, such as your profile or an already-open experience. Do not keep submitting new edits to solve a display mismatch; first establish whether the original change saved.
If the website's controls are not responding, use Roblox's general website troubleshooting. Its browser checks include temporary files, cookies and add-ons. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which step affected the result. Read the browser's description before clearing data, and make sure you can sign back in.
When several Roblox pages fail at once, consult Roblox Status for a reported incident. A status page is context; a healthy platform report does not resolve an account-specific error or make a rejected name acceptable.
What to send if the problem continues
Use Roblox's support guidance and describe a reproducible result. Include your @username, device and operating system, the page used, the attempted time and the error. Explain whether Account Info retains the old value after refresh or whether only another screen shows it.
A useful report might read: "On the browser Account Info page, Save returned this message at 18:20. Refreshing still shows the old value. The mobile app shows the same result."
If someone changed the name without your permission, investigate account access as well. The account security warning signs guide covers the records to check. An unfamiliar name alone does not identify who made the change.
